Moving out of the office and into the living room
Today I went to dinner with my brothers. Prior to that I was sitting in the oldest brother's living room playing with this new PlayStation 3. The video games are great and the blueray is top notch quality but what really impressed me was the internet browser.
This is really the start of how media is changing from the big screen and computer monitors and moving to your living room. Sure there has been video on demand movies and wireless internet, but now it is even easier to just be connected.
The experience is still being developed but it so close to becoming the normal. Next we will see cable and satellite companies providing internet browsers on your TV. Apple TV and Windows media centers now enable the multimedia internet experience but PS3 has made it even easier than ever to connect in your living room.
I did find some limitations in the internet browser experience. For instance PS3 did not always render CSS sites properly and it seems like it is a propriety browser from Sony. I noticed this because windows media files did not play in the browser and the flash player would not upgrade.
This process can be the solution that I have been looking for. This may help me get out of the office and into the living room. I actually never browse the internet anymore and I rarely check my RSS feeds but I would more if it was convenient for me. Xbox doesn't even offer that convenience, does the Nintendo Wi offer that experience? I am interested to see how this will roll-out in the commercial market. Have you been using internet on your TV in the living room?

Alex, I wish I could say I was happy about this but as designer/developer having companies like Sony come out with proprietary browsers only makes life harder for people like me.
I have a Nintendo Wii at home which utilizes an Opera powered browswer which is great becuase they have great support web standards. Hopefully as more companies like Sony or Comcast build more browsers for devices in the living room they'll use a rendering engine like webkit or gecko.
Yea, originally I was favoring the WI. The experience just rocks. I only played it a little but I was really impressed.
I was originally looking at the Ps3 b/c I would switch my Netflix account to BlueRay. Either way you lose something b/c each corporation is trying to be a king.
