I use Imovie, Final Cut or Adobe Premiere. To get started Imovie is great if you have a Mac. On PC, not so sure which basic video editor is good.

Once you get over the self-consciousness, video can become a great (and quick) way of communicating. As you say, it just takes time to experiment and to develop your own style.
